Whoa there on calling Ruger about the "oversize throats." This exercise will teach you a lot about your gun, some of which will help you in shooting it well with jacketed bullets, too. If it is, then just remember to avoid that one for shots requiring best accuracy. On the other hand, if one chamber is much larer than the others, it is simple to size for the majority and test to see if the oversize chamber is any less accurate. Or, you may find that sizing for that chamber still allows acceptable accuracy with the others. So, if you found one throat much smaller than the others, you may decide to simply size for the others and not shoot cast bullets out of that cylinder if it "grabs" the bullet when you force one into that chamber. Most folks learn to shoot as well as possible with what they already bought. If you did not get lucky with the factory cylinder and you really want them all to shoot to the same point, then a custom cylinder that is "line-bore" to your gun is the EXPENSIVE solution. The results will tell you if you have one chamber (or more) that you don't want to use for your most demanding shots. Setting up six targets and CAREFULLY shooting each chamber in the gun at a different target about 5 times (30 total shots) will give you a group for each separate chamber, and let you see if they are all centered about the same with respect to the aiming point. If one is MUCh smaller than the others, then getting it opened-up to the size of the others is a good idea if you are looking for the best accruacy.īut, before paying your money (or spending your own time) to make the throats the same diameter, it is best to make sure that they all shoot to the same point.
